Women’s tennis greats Lindsay Davenport and Tracey Austin lead an entourage of Bay Area celebrities and outstanding tennis pros headlining the 17th annual Alta Bates Summit Celebrity Classic at the Berkeley Tennis Club.
The September 20 tennis event and its companion September 8 golf tourney (a perennial sellout) support two Medical Center programs for at-risk youth — Thunder Road, a substance abuse recovery program for teens and their families, and Youth Bridge mentoring programs.
Davenport and Austin will battle in women’s and mixed doubles matches. Davenport leads in career prize money among all-time female tennis players. Her singles honors include Grand Slam championships and an Olympic Gold medal. In 1979, then 16-year-old Austin became the youngest-ever U.S. Open singles champ; she reclaimed the title in 1981.
“Don’t miss our gala Monte Carlo night at the Claremont Country Club, this year’s new location, for a casino gaming and black-tie preferred evening,” says Margo Garner, Celebrity Classic Chair. “It’s all great fun and, best of all, benefits a great cause.”
